Honda XRE 300 off-roader which is currently on sale only in Brazil is reported to be gearing up to enter the Indian market as part of their new plan to launch at least 4 new motorcycles in India by 2018. Honda Motorcycles and Scooters India (HMSI) could be looking at a 2017 festive season launch for its compact tourer.
If launched, XRE 300 would occupy the niche which was created by the 150cc Hero Impulse. Even though the concept of a compact off-roader caught the fantasy of many a riders, Impulse’s puny 150 cc engine was widely considered to be inadequate for such an application. XRE, with an engine twice the size, could just be what the prospective buyers in the segment have been waiting for.
The motorcycle adopts a straightforward off-roader styling with a high-mounted front mudguard which is integrated into the simple fuel tank, headlamp with bikini fairing, single piece seat, high-mounted exhaust canister (for better water wading capability), long-travel suspension, high ground clearance, spoke wheels, and dual-purpose tyres.
Honda XRE 300 is powered by a 291.6 cc single-cylinder air-cooled EFI motor which is mated to a 5-speed gearbox. Power and torque figures stand at 25.4 hp and 27 Nm respectively. Notable features include front and rear disc brakes with optional ABS, and a fully digital instrument console.
Once launched, the new Honda XRE 300 will rival with the likes of Royal Enfield Himalayan and the upcoming KTM Duke 390 based adventure motorcycle. Pricing of this motorcycle depends on whether it is sold as a CBU or a CKD.
