For those who may have missing teeth – because of disease or because of accidents and injuries – one solution can be dentures. Dentures are removable plates or frames that contain artificial teeth. There are two types of dentures – full and partial dentures. Full dentures are made out of a flesh toned acrylic base that is placed over your gums – this upper base of the denture will cover your palate, and the lower base will cover your tongue. Full dentures are made by taking an impression of your mouth, and full dentures are used when a full row of teeth are missing – either top or bottom. Conventional full dentures are placed when one set of teeth are missing, or have been removed. For immediate full dentures, however, your dentist will measure and create a model of your jaw – and once this is done, you will be able to insert and use the dentures. However, you will need to visit the dentist multiple times so that your dentures can be realigned, even after several months.

Partial dentures, on the other hand, will be attached to your existing teeth, and crowns will be used to support your dentures.

With dentures, you may feel awkward for the initial months, and you may have issues with eating and talking in the initial stages – however, this will eventually pass and you will feel comfortable with dentures in your mouth. There are certain methods you should take while having dentures to maintain them well. The first step is to remove and rinse the dentures after eating, to keep them clean. Once you remove your dentures, make sure to clean your mouth after removing your dentures, to keep your mouth clean as well. Make sure to brush your dentures at least daily – but make sure that you don’t use denture cleansers inside your mouth. One of the best ways to clean your dentures is to leave them soaking in denture cleansers overnight, because dentures should remain moist to keep their shape. Thus, it is recommended to keep dentures in a solution overnight. However, if you do use a denture cleanser or a denture solution, make sure you rinse the dentures before putting them in your mouth. This is because denture solutions can be very harmful to your mouth, and can irritate the skin within your mouth. Make sure you maintain contact with your dentist, and that you schedule regular check-ups to ensure that everything is healthy.
